Explore the water after dark and learn how to stir bioluminescent plankton into light
2 hrs
Guide, kayak, safety equipment
Paddle into the quiet of the night with guides who know the area. This guided kayak tour combines the search for bioluminescence with the peacefulness of being on the water after dark. The amount and brightness of the glow vary with natural conditions, and sightings are not guaranteed.
Cancel at least 7 days ahead for a refund, minus $15. No refunds for no-shows. If unsafe conditions cancel your tour, you'll receive a full refund or may reschedule subject to availability. If you cancel with less than 7 days' notice, only one reschedule is allowed; no refund applies if that rescheduled tour is canceled due to weather.

Park in the middle grassy area in front of the kayak equipment trailer, not in the general store parking lot. If you arrive before the guide is at the driveway, wait on Hjelvicks Road until you see the guide with a red headlamp.
For the night kayak tour, cancellation notices are sent 24–48 hours ahead when possible. Wind forecasts can change at any time, so shorter notice is possible.
Wear shoes that can get wet and preferably synthetic clothing. Bring a sweatshirt or light sweater for after your paddle. If you bring your own headlamp, choose one with a red-light function; otherwise, a loaner is provided.

Jerry, Christina, Marshall, Cam, and Jill lead a genuinely impressive lineup of outdoor experiences around Hood Canal and the Olympic Peninsula, from mushroom foraging and forest walks to kayaking, oyster shucking, crabbing, and waterfall hikes. Guides are consistently praised for their patience, deep local knowledge, and ability to make complete beginners feel at ease on the water or in the woods. The bioluminescence kayak tour and oyster adventure in particular seem to leave a lasting impression on visitors. The small gift shop in Brinnon is a nice bonus, well stocked with field guides and foraging gear, and the staff are generous with local tips even if you just stop in. Activities run seasonally, so it's worth checking availability ahead of time since not everything is offered year-round. One reviewer noted a less experienced fill-in guide during a tour, which is worth keeping in mind, though that appears to be an isolated situation rather than the norm. Overall, the vibe here is warm, knowledgeable, and well worth the drive.
I had a wonderful time at the mushrooming class! The instructor was knowledgeable, engaging, and patient. I walked away from the class with a bounty of knowledge about local mushrooms. Plus, the gift shop had an excellent selection of mushrooming books and equipment. I'd gladly take another class from the folks at Hood Canal Adventures!
