Head out from Bisbee for a full-day turquoise mining expedition at Courtland’s Avalon Mine, Arizona’s only pay-per-dig site. Hike to the tailings, learn local history, and collect specimens along the way.
The tour starts at 7:00 a.m.; arrive 15 minutes early for check-in. Hiking shoes and long pants are required, and you may encounter uneven ground or loose rock. Do not remove protected artifacts such as prehistoric pottery, stone hammers, or arrowheads.

Wear hiking shoes and long pants. Bring long sleeve shirts, sunscreen, and gloves if you want them. You may encounter uneven ground or loose rock.
Expect about 4.5 miles of hiking round trip with a moderate elevation grade. The site is about one mile above sea level, so plan for some physical exertion.
You get a day pack, hiking sticks, two liters of water, trail snacks, and three gallon-size bags to collect specimens.
