Standing beneath the dense canopy of El Yunque National Forest, you hear the forest before you see it. Coqui frogs call from the undergrowth, water rushes over mossy rocks, and parrots move through branches overhead. The air is thick and warm, carrying the scent of wet earth and tropical flowers. El Yunque National Forest covers the Sierra de Luquillo mountains in northeastern Puerto Rico, offering a living landscape unlike anything on the US mainland.
