As a Flagler College alum, I have a soft spot for St. Augustine, and I love finding new reasons to explore a city I already know and love. The Tasting Tours gave me exactly that opportunity. Renee was our guide, and I appreciated how much local history and insight he shared. Even with my connection to the city, I came away having learned something new. That’s what makes this experience worthwhile for locals as well as visitors. We enjoyed tender beef paired with red wine at 17 King Restaurant, then headed to Peppers Mexican Restaurant, where Christian introduced us to some wonderful Mexican flavors. We sampled a shrimp quesadilla, chips with homemade salsa, and a margarita while learning about blue corn tortillas, the many varieties of peppers they use, and the complexity of traditional mole. I also loved discovering that Peppers has its own distillery and brings in its own mezcal. At The Gifted Cork, we enjoyed a charcuterie tasting with Chilean wine pairings. They highlight a different country or region each month, giving you another reason to return. We finished at Whips with a bourbon peach cobbler waffle topped with homemade whipped cream. I’m not even a huge dessert person, but that was a pretty wonderful way to end the tour! What I loved most was the combination of delicious food, thoughtful pairings, local stories, and the opportunity to discover businesses beyond the usual sightseeing routine. A big shout-out to Dawn and Niki for bringing these experiences together, and to Renee for making the tour so engaging.
