Derek and his team of genuine cowboys deliver something rare: an authentic wilderness experience that pulls you completely away from modern life. The multi-day pack trips through the Jedediah Wilderness earn particular praise, with guests raving about therapeutic time spent with well-trained horses, spectacular mountain scenery, and surprisingly excellent campfire meals. Derek stands out for his storytelling, local knowledge spanning five generations, and genuine care for riders of all abilities. He's especially patient with nervous children and accommodating with guests who have disabilities. The horses steal the show according to many reviewers, described as calm, majestic, and perfectly behaved even on challenging mountain terrain. Options range from one-hour introductory rides near Grand Targhee Resort to demanding multi-day expeditions covering 16+ miles. One significant negative review describes a complete miscommunication about a half-day ride, where the outfitter wasn't ready at the scheduled time and the facility didn't match website expectations. However, they immediately refunded the disappointed guests. For those seeking an immersive escape with genuine wranglers who know these mountains intimately, this appears to be a bucket-list worthy adventure that consistently exceeds expectations.

What a wonderful trip! If you love stunning nature and horses and awe inspiring views- this is for you! We were completely immersed in the wilderness. The horses were the true stars of the show. This experience will leave you with a deep understanding of these wonderful animals and a deeper connection with them (Hi Maize). The cowboys (Derek, Clay and Scott) were truly awesome and a deep respect was earned from us. They seemed to be carved out of the very mountains they mastered. Part horse, part mountaineer, part Chef and definitely all Cowboy. We learnt a lot from them. How to behave with those majestic animals. How to just be quiet and sit and stare at the bonfire or out onto a vista most would be lucky to find on a 1000 piece Puzzle. It’s a different kind of luxury. One with sore butts and zero screen time. Get it while you still can!!!
