Explore Grand Canyon Geology, History & Viewpoints With a Guide
9 hours
Up to 10 people
Park fees, lunch, transport
Explore the Grand Canyon with guide-led geology interpretation and regional stories. Travel in a Transit van designed for comfortable sightseeing.
8:00 AM – 8:30 AM | Hotel Pickup & The Scenic Trek
Your guide picks you up in a custom touring van at your hotel or pickup point. The drive begins with a climb through the Ponderosa Pine forests of the Colorado Plateau with sweeping views of the Aspen-clad San Francisco Peaks and the descent through the plains to the Canyon. (Vans are equipped with a microphone system so everyone can hear the stories!)
10:00 – 11:30 AM | The Grand Reveal at Mather Point & Yavapai
Experience the widest point of the Grand Canyon at Mather Point, a place where the scale of nature defies logic. Your guide will bring the Canyon’s walls to life telling the geologic story in an easy to understand “rock” talk. To help grasp the concepts we pass-around samples, bridging the gap between the scientific “2-billion-year clock”. Guides also set up a viewing scope and point out unique points of interest that only a local would know. (This stop is also an opportunity to grab coffee and/or a bathroom break).
11:30 AM | Picnic Lunch
Locally Crafted Picnic Lunch: Choose from a variety of fresh sandwiches and salads prepared the morning of your tour by our very own Route 66 Cafe. Featuring authentic Arizona-made products, this picnic spread offers a true “Taste of the West” (Selection made during checkout).
12:30 PM | Grand Canyon Village & Historic District
Time to stretch the legs and go on a walk. Your Grand Canyon guide will lead you from the parking area along a paved, flat path that leads into the historic village. Tour the El Tovar Hotel & the Hopi House (est.1905), We will peek into the Kolb Studio which is perched directly on the edge of the Canyon! The Village has many shops to browse and loads of history to explore. This stop is always a crowd favorite!
2:00 PM | The Desert View Drive (East Rim)
We begin the “Loop” toward the East Entrance. We’ll “Rim-hop” to stops like Grandview Point, Lipan point, and Moran Point. Lipan point has a great view of the Colorado River and sweeping views of the Canyon which makes for some of the best photo opportunities of the day!
Wildlife Watch: This corridor is the most common area to spot Elk, Mule Deer, and the California Condor.
3:00 PM | Desert View Watchtower & Ancestral History
Our final major stop is the Desert View Watchtower. Designed by Mary Colter to mimic ancient Puebloan architecture, it offers 360-degree views of the Painted Desert and the Little Colorado River Gorge.
4:30 PM | The Navajo Nation & Cameron Trading Post
Exit through the East Gate and drop down into the Painted Desert. We make a final stop at the historic Cameron Trading Post on the Navajo Reservation to shop for authentic Native American jewelry and crafts. (If p/u in Williams or GC area lodges the tour will exit out South rim)
5:00 PM | Return to Flagstaff We drive back to your accomodations with final recommendations for dinner in town.
