This tour reaches 10,023 feet and includes winding mountain roads. It is not recommended if you are pregnant or if you have heart or respiratory conditions, severe back problems, or other conditions that may be aggravated by high altitude or mountain driving.
If you have been scuba diving, wait the recommended surface interval before joining this high-altitude tour.
Standing at the rim of Haleakalā National Park, the landscape unfolds in layers of rust, charcoal, and silver — a volcanic wilderness that feels more like another planet than a Hawaiian island. The air is thin and cool, a stark contrast to the beaches far below. Haleakalā National Park stretches from this 10,000-foot summit all the way down to the lush rainforest coastline of Kipahulu, offering two distinct worlds within a single protected place.
The guides here consistently earn rave reviews, with Eric, Chad, Chase, Bryan, and Daniel mentioned by name as knowledgeable, fun, and genuinely passionate about sharing Maui's beauty. Travelers appreciate how these guides reveal hidden spots along the Road to Hana that they'd miss driving solo, plus they handle those notorious 500+ curves while keeping everyone comfortable and entertained. The Mercedes vans come stocked with snacks and drinks, and guides often bring local treats like Maui gold pineapple to enhance the experience. What really stands out is the personal touch. Guides don't just recite facts—they share stories, help with photography, and maintain warm relationships with local communities along the route. Reviewers mention waterfall jumps, black sand beaches, and farm-fresh lunches as highlights. Just note that tours combining Haleakalā summit (over 10,000 feet) with the winding Road to Hana can be challenging if you're sensitive to altitude or motion sickness. Otherwise, travelers consistently say this tour beats attempting the drive yourself, making it worth every penny for cruise passengers and resort guests alike.
Today, we did the “ Maui Upcountry Drive, Haleakala NP & Ocean Vodka Distillery Tour” with Bryan and had a great time. Bryan was very knowledgeable about several things and answered a lot of our general questions as well that those specific to the tour. Before heading to Haleakalā, we stopped at a general store to grab lunch and Maui Wine which was across the steeet. Bryan made sure we stayed hydrated to prevent attitude sickness as we climbed up to the 10K feet above sea level to the top of Haleakala. Then afterwards we went to Ocean Vodka Distillery, where we were able to order dinner and wait for sunset (optional). Also, Bryan has a great playlist that any “Swiftie” would love. Highly recommend this tour and Bryan!
