Charleston City Market sits at the beating heart of the Holy City's historic district, and after dark it takes on a character few daytime visitors ever witness. Stretching four blocks from Meeting Street to East Bay, this storied marketplace has been a gathering place since the early 1800s, and the cobblestones surrounding it have absorbed centuries of whispered secrets. On a haunted carriage tour through downtown Charleston, the area around Charleston City Market becomes a portal to the city's shadowy past, where gas lamps flicker against weathered brick and the hooves of your carriage horse echo through narrow alleys.
As your carriage rolls past Charleston City Market, your guide brings the surrounding streets to life with tales of restless spirits, ill-fated lovers, and the lingering presence of those who once worked these stalls. You will pass haunted churchyards, antebellum mansions, and dim corners that locals have long avoided after sundown. The contrast is striking, while Charleston City Market bustles with vendors and visitors during the day, the evening reveals a quieter, eerier side of the surrounding French Quarter and Market Street area. Listen for the creak of old shutters, catch the scent of salt air drifting in from the harbor, and watch how the moonlight reshapes familiar facades into something far more mysterious.
This tour is ideal for ghost story enthusiasts, history lovers, couples seeking an atmospheric date night, and families with older children who enjoy a good spine-tingling tale. Travelers who want to experience Charleston beyond the typical sightseeing checklist will find that the haunted carriage route around Charleston City Market offers both genuine local history and the kind of memorable storytelling that lingers long after the ride ends. Climb aboard, settle into your seat, and let the legends of Charleston City Market and its haunted surroundings unfold beneath the Lowcountry stars.
Charleston's historic streets come alive on these carriage tours, and the guides consistently steal the show. Names like Josh, Michael, Evan, and Brian pop up repeatedly in glowing reviews, with guests praising their deep knowledge of local history and warm, engaging personalities. The horses are equally celebrated, well-cared-for and clearly a point of pride for the operation. One thing that stands out is how naturally guides handle the unexpected. One reviewer noted their horse America got unsettled mid-tour, and guide Josh stepped in calmly to keep everything on track without missing a beat. That kind of attentiveness speaks to how seriously the team takes both safety and the guest experience. A handful of guests mentioned they wished for slightly more detail on some of the landmarks passed, so if you're a deep history buff, consider coming with a few questions ready. That said, the overwhelming majority of visitors leave charmed and recommend the experience without hesitation, including repeat guests who keep coming back and families with young children. For a first look at Charleston or a return visit, this tour delivers a genuinely enjoyable way to see the city.
I had a lovely time this afternoon with Jason in the box seat! I’ve been involved with carriage driving for the past 15 years so I jumped at a chance to take one of the famous carriage tours while in Charleston , and it did not disappoint! The horses are in tip top condition, and a total open floor plan with videos explaining how driving works is so important for people to learn about working horses , and most notably they understand the importance of safety. This is how carriage tours everywhere should be run! Bravo to the Palmetto team!
