Historic Woodlawn House Tour in Alexandria, VA

I opted for the joint tour, which I definitely recommend, what a wonderful experience. Both guides, Autumn in Woodlawn and Joe in the Pope-Leighey House were engaging, knowledgeable, passionate about their subject, and willing to answer any and all questions. To address negative reviews of the Woodlawn estate, I certainly experienced a well rounded tour by Autumn that provided detailed info on the Curtis owners and their lives and history; the history of the structure and its style; then info on both the enslaved members of the household and the purchase of the property by Quakers and its conversion into a Free Black community. I’m a historian… and knew nothing about this later community! It’s certainly an important part of the history of the property and area, and I was fascinated. My tour with Joe of the Pope-Leighey House was excellent as well, aided by his sly sense of humor and public engagement skills. He is equally passionate about this property and FLW - you’ll learn so much about the two owners, the house being moved TWICE, how it was constructed, and the little details that bring a tour and property to life! These are both interesting properties and histories that, surprisingly, work well together. If you’re taking the time to do one, just do both. Highly recommend! Thank you Autumn and Joe for a great, interesting morning.
