Standing at Waiʻānapanapa State Park, the contrast is immediate and unforgettable. Jet-black volcanic sand meets the churning turquoise surf, while ironwood trees bend in the salt wind above the shoreline. The air carries the scent of sea spray and wet lava rock. Waiʻānapanapa State Park rewards those who linger with hidden sea caves, blowholes, and a coastal trail that winds through some of the most dramatic scenery on Maui.
This locally owned, family-run operation gets consistently glowing praise for their Road to Hana tours, with Brandon and owner Doug mentioned repeatedly as exceptional guides. What sets them apart is the authentic local perspective—these are Maui natives who share deep knowledge of Hawaiian history, culture, and hidden spots most tourists never see. The full-circle route (rather than doubling back) takes you to memorable stops like black sand beaches and waterfalls, with comfortable vans equipped with charging ports and thoughtful amenities like bug spray and sanitizer. The 11-hour tour runs smoothly from pickup to drop-off, with guides sharing stories and insights the entire way. Homemade lunches prepared by Brandon and Doug are included, though a couple reviewers suggest bringing extra snacks since lunch comes early in the long day. The personal touch really shines through—guests mention meeting Doug's family, visiting where he grew up, and feeling like they've joined the ohana by day's end. It's the kind of experience where you're learning from someone who genuinely loves their island and wants to share it with you.
