Itinerary
Depart from Goulding’s Lodge and begin your journey toward Horseshoe Canyon. During the short 10‑minute drive, enjoy views of Rock Door Canyon as it stretches between Oljato Mesa and Rock Door Mesa, offering an early glimpse into the dramatic landscape of the region.
Once inside Horseshoe Canyon, you’ll wind through sandy paths to a quiet, secluded area where the natural surroundings feel timeless and untouched. Here, you’ll arrive at our on‑property cookout location, where our friendly chuckwagon staff will prepare your evening meal. While dinner is served, gather together for a cultural storytelling session that shares Navajo traditions and perspectives connected to the land.
After dinner and stories, the journey continues deeper into the canyon toward a scenic overlook. From this elevated vantage point, you’ll take in sweeping views of Monument Valley from above, looking down upon its legendary red rock formations. Following local custom, you’ll face east and watch the sunset “backwards,” as the fading light paints the Monument Valley skyline in shifting, unforgettable colors. Some moderate hiking involved in this experience, short distance (approximately 100 yards).
After enjoying this unique spectacle, you’ll retrace your route through the canyon and return to Goulding’s Lodge, bringing the evening to a memorable close.
