Standing at the edge of the Cliff Walk in Newport, Rhode Island, The Breakers commands attention the moment it comes into view. This 70-room palazzo, built for Cornelius Vanderbilt II in the 1890s, rewards visitors with soaring painted ceilings, marble columns imported from Europe, and rooms furnished as they were during the height of America's Gilded Age. The Breakers is a place where history feels immediate and tangible.
We did the tour yesterday with Ray, and he was fantastic!! He knows all the history of Newport, and it was so interesting. He was funny, told us stories of growing up there, waved to people he knew walking by. You can see he really loves what he does…and Newport! The Breakers was spectacular….the only disappointment was the construction going on which allowed us not to be able to go to the backyard for a good view of the water : ( Next time in Newport will be a visit to the Marble House, and we would definitely do another Viking tour! I recommend everyone do it!
