Dives are not automatically guided. A guide is required if you are diving without a buddy, hold a Scuba Diver (Level 1) certification, last dived more than 12 months ago, are under 18 without an adult certified diver, or are making your first ocean dive or first dive after certification.
You need Open Water Diver certification and must bring proof of certification. You must confirm that you have dived within the past 24 months. If your last dive was more than two years ago, complete a full-day scuba refresher before the trip.
If you dive without a guide, carry your own timekeeping device or dive computer.

Step into the clear, warm waters off Key Largo and you enter a world that exists nowhere else on the American shoreline. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park stretches across roughly 70 nautical square miles of protected Atlantic waters, sheltering brain corals, sea fans, and darting parrotfish just below the surface. Whether you peer through a glass-bottom boat hull or slip on a mask, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park rewards every level of curiosity with color and life.
My son and I came down for a 3 day dive trip to get his Open Water certification. I did a PADI refresher course concurrent with all of his pool and open water training. My son and I had private instruction from Robert for each of the three days. Everything about Scuba Fun was outstanding from the initial telephone conversation to gather information and book our trip, to the instruction from Robert. His safety-first focused approach is exactly what my 14 yo son needed for his first diving experience. Robert is an excellent teacher. He taught us both so much while allowing us to get the most from the amazing diving in Key Largo.
