Kalama Park sits along the sunny shoreline of Kihei, a stretch of South Maui where the trade winds stay gentle and the water tends to glass over in the morning light. This is where your paddleboard lesson begins, on a forgiving beach with soft sand, easy ocean access, and the kind of wide-open horizon that makes first-time paddlers exhale and settle in. Kalama Park is a local favorite for a reason, the conditions here are some of the most beginner-friendly on the island, with calm, clear water that lets you see straight down to the reef and the occasional green sea turtle gliding by.
The experience starts with a grounding lesson on the sand at Kalama Park, where your instructor walks you through balance, stance, paddle technique, and ocean safety before you ever touch the water. From there, you wade out from the Kalama Park shoreline and ease onto the board, finding your footing in waist-deep water before paddling out into the bay. The pace is unhurried. You will feel the warm Pacific under your feet, hear the soft slap of the paddle on the surface, and watch the West Maui Mountains rise in the distance. On a good day, honu surface nearby, and the reef below Kalama Park flickers with tropical fish.
This lesson is perfect for first-timers, families with older kids, couples looking for a memorable morning together, and anyone who wants to try stand-up paddleboarding in a setting that feels safe rather than intimidating. Travelers staying in Kihei, Wailea, or anywhere in South Maui will appreciate how accessible Kalama Park is, and how quickly a nervous beginner becomes a confident paddler here. If you are looking for a genuine, low-stress introduction to one of Hawaii's signature water sports, a lesson at Kalama Park is a beautiful way to spend a Maui morning on the water.
Big Kahuna's instructors consistently earn praise for their patience and ability to get first-timers standing on boards quickly. Names like Sol, Pedro, Jesse, David, and Bryan come up repeatedly, with reviewers noting how they tailor instruction to each person's needs and make nervous kids feel comfortable. The Kihei location (the Cove) seems ideal for beginners with small waves and shallow water, and there's a bonus many don't expect: sea turtles swimming alongside you during lessons. The photography package gets enthusiastic mentions throughout the reviews. Photographers like Johnny, Leilani, and Rory capture those triumphant moments on the waves, and multiple families mention framing these photos as trip souvenirs. Group lessons stay small with multiple instructors dividing people up, so you're not lost in a crowd. While one older review mentions a completely missed lesson (since resolved with a refund), recent feedback consistently points to a well-organized operation where the whole crew cheers for everyone in the water and genuinely wants you to succeed.
Everybody was great! Pedro was a patient and amazing instructor, all of us (wife, daughter, and I all never having surfed before) were able to stand up and have fun. Johnny takes some great pictures too! (I'm sure I'm falling down here, but don't tell anyone because he made me look like a pro!)
