Kaumahina State Wayside Park is one of those rest stops along the Road to Hana that catches you completely off guard with its beauty. Perched on a bluff about a third of the way along the legendary coastal drive, this leafy roadside park opens up to a sweeping view of Maui's rugged northeastern shoreline, with Keanae Peninsula stretching dramatically into the Pacific in the distance. On the Road to Hana Guided Day Tour, Kaumahina State Wayside Park serves as a welcome pause where the lush rainforest air, the salt of the ocean below, and the towering hala and kukui trees give you your first real sense of how wild and untamed this side of the island truly is.
Stepping off the van at Kaumahina State Wayside Park, you trade the winding switchbacks for a moment of stillness. Your guide points out the native plants thriving along the bluff, shares the legends tied to the coastline below, and gives you space to wander the short paths, snap photos, and breathe in the cool, damp mountain air. The contrast with earlier stops like the black sand beaches and waterfalls farther down the road is part of what makes Kaumahina State Wayside Park memorable. Here the experience is panoramic and peaceful, a chance to take in the scale of the cliffs, the deep green valleys, and the surf crashing far below before the journey continues toward Hana town.
This stop is perfect for travelers who want more than just a drive-by glimpse of Maui's coastline, especially photographers, nature lovers, and curious first-timers who appreciate a guide weaving in local history and ecology. Families enjoy the easy access and shaded picnic areas, while couples linger at the overlook for that quintessential Road to Hana photo. If you are looking for a tour that treats Kaumahina State Wayside Park as more than a quick pit stop, this guided day trip turns it into one of the small, unforgettable highlights of an already legendary Maui journey.
Travelers consistently praise the knowledgeable guides who bring the Road to Hana to life with Hawaiian history, cultural insights, and local perspective. Multiple reviewers mention guides like Cory, Damine, Jr., and Georg by name, highlighting their engaging personalities and deep knowledge of the island. Many guests note these are native Hawaiians or long-time residents who share stories and traditions you'd miss on a self-drive. The tour includes lunch, water, and snacks throughout the day, with smart stops at waterfalls, black sand beaches, sea turtles, and rainbow eucalyptus trees. This is clearly the way to experience this winding, challenging drive without the stress. Reviewers who'd done the route themselves before emphasize how much better it is to relax and let someone else handle the twisty roads while you enjoy the scenery. One negative review mentions a driver creating traffic backups, though this appears to be an isolated incident among overwhelmingly positive feedback. Plan for a full day, bring motion sickness medication if you're prone to car sickness, and expect pickup from area resorts.
Wow! This tour was worth every single penny. Corey our guide was so funny and knowledgable about the area and had grown up on the island so had lots of anecdotes from personal experiences. This really added something extra to the already amazing tour. The stops had the perfect amount of time without hanging around for too long and Corey knew all the good photo or swim spots which was fantastic. We felt in safe hands driving along the twists and turns on the road. Super detailed information on the plants on the road to Hana and some fun sing songs too. Highlights were the black sand beach and seeing the green sea turtles. Mahalo Corey and Hana & beyond tours for making this tour one of the highlights of our time in Maui!
