Paddle a challenging Taos canyon run with expert guide navigation
7.5 hrs
Safety gear, river gear, lunch
Take on a full day of wilderness rafting designed for adventurous paddlers. Guides navigate the raft while you paddle through challenging whitewater.
The day will begin by meeting at the Far-Flung Adventures Boathouse at 8:00 am, where we will equip you with all necessary safety and river equipment. Any extra equipment you need such as wetsuits, splash gear or neoprene river shoes are included in your reservation.
Once ready for the day we will load up and take the 15-minute shuttle to the starting point for our 17-mile run down the world-famous Taos Box. The trip begins with a few warmup miles of easy Class II rapids, followed by several miles of more difficult and technical Class III/IV rapids, and then finally culminate with six miles of Class IV-IV+ rapids, sometimes known as the “hour of power”.
The final and most extreme section of whitewater of the day begins at the top of the nearly vertical “Powerline Falls” and then descends swiftly into constant whitewater and rapids such as “The Rockgarden” and “Corkscrew”and “Boat Reamer”. While crashing through the final class IV of the day, “Sunset Rapid”, a photographer will capture some snapshots of your run. Following Sunset Rapid the canyon abruptly widens as we enter the tranquil Orilla Verde section, where shortly thereafter we will take-out at the Taos Junction Bridge.
We will plan to have guests back to our office and their vehicles around 3pm. Halfway through the trip we will provide a delicious riverside lunch, most often including an array of home-roasted sandwich meats and homemade dips and salsas. Our famous deli lunch is a staple of the Far-Flung experience, as 40 years in business has not only taught us the principles of reading white-water…but also of good food and healthy eating!
