Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens owes its existence to Ima Hogg, a Houston philanthropist who assembled one of the most significant collections of American antiques in the country over several decades. The pink stucco mansion, designed by architect John Staub and completed in 1928, served as her private residence before she donated both the house and its contents to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, in 1957. Today the property operates as a branch of that institution, preserving roughly 4,700 objects that span furniture, textiles, metalwork, ceramics, and paintings produced in America between roughly 1620 and 1870.

Visitors move through a series of period rooms arranged to reflect specific eras and regional styles, from a spare New England parlor furnished in the William and Mary manner to richly appointed Federal-era dining rooms that reflect the prosperity of the early republic. The surrounding gardens, also shaped largely by Hogg's vision, are divided into distinct garden rooms including a formal parterre, a woodland walk, and a cactus garden that nods to the Texas landscape.

Guided and self-guided tours are available, and knowledgeable docents regularly lead thematic walks that illuminate connections between the objects and the broader sweep of American social history.
