After Sanibel incorporated as a city in 1974, residents passed a land-use plan that restricted development and preserved roughly half the island as wildlife refuge and conservation land. The beach takes its name from the Bowman family, early settlers who farmed the land in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the surrounding park is maintained today by Lee County.

The shelling here has drawn collectors for generations because Sanibel's east-west orientation causes shells swept in from the Gulf to accumulate rather than wash parallel to shore, a phenomenon locals call the Sanibel Stoop, named for the posture shell hunters adopt as they scan the sand. Loggerhead sea turtles nest along this stretch of coast from May through October, and the county posts nest markers to protect them. Birders find the area productive year-round, with shorebirds, wading birds, and migrating songbirds all using the adjacent scrub and shoreline. The park includes restrooms, outdoor showers, picnic shelters, and a fitness station, keeping the experience simple and focused on the natural setting.
