Buck Island Reef National Monument was designated by President Kennedy in 1961 and later expanded to protect roughly 19,015 acres of surrounding ocean. Managed by the National Park Service, the monument preserves one of the finest examples of elkhorn coral barrier reef in the Caribbean, alongside nesting habitat for endangered sea turtles and a diverse array of tropical fish species.

The island's signature attraction is its marked underwater snorkeling trail, where painted markers on the seafloor guide swimmers past towering coral formations and schools of parrotfish, surgeonfish, and the occasional sea turtle. The calm, gin-clear lagoon on the island's western side is ideal for first-time snorkelers and seasoned divers alike. A short hiking trail climbs to an observation point where the full arc of the reef becomes visible below the surface.

Access is exclusively by water, and boat tours depart regularly from Christiansted Harbor on St. Croix, typically taking around thirty minutes each way. Charter operators provide snorkel gear and guided narration, giving visitors useful context about the reef ecology and conservation efforts underway.
