Caneel Bay sits within the boundaries of Virgin Islands National Park, a designation that has preserved its hillsides, reefs, and shoreline from heavy development. The park covers roughly two-thirds of St. John and protects some of the most intact tropical ecosystems in the Caribbean.

The bay itself offers excellent snorkeling along its fringes, where staghorn coral, brain coral, and a colorful range of reef fish are regularly spotted. The calm, protected waters make it approachable for swimmers of most skill levels, and the gradual sandy bottom near shore is ideal for wading.

History runs deep at Caneel Bay. Danish colonists established sugar plantations here in the 1700s, and the stone ruins that remain on the grounds offer a sobering counterpoint to the natural splendor. The former Caneel Bay Resort, once a flagship Rockresort property opened by Laurance Rockefeller in 1956, shaped the bay's identity as a refined retreat for decades before closing after hurricane damage.

Today the site is being redeveloped under a national park lease, but the beach remains publicly accessible. Visitors arriving from Cruz Bay can reach Caneel Bay by taxi or on foot along the park road, making it one of the more rewarding and accessible stretches of coastline on the island.
