The Chilkoot Trail and Dyea Site sit roughly nine miles northwest of Skagway along Dyea Road, administered jointly by the U.S. National Park Service and Parks Canada as part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. Dyea itself boomed almost overnight in 1897 as the trailhead town for the Chilkoot Pass route, swelling to a population rivaling Skagway before the completion of the White Pass railroad rendered it obsolete and nearly erased it within two years.

The trail climbs roughly 33 miles from tidewater at Dyea to Lake Bennett in British Columbia, gaining more than 3,500 feet at the infamous Chilkoot Pass. Artifacts from the stampede era, including sleds, stoves, and boots, lie preserved along the route under a joint heritage agreement, lending the landscape an open-air museum quality that no conventional trail can match.

Most hikers complete the route in three to five days, camping at established sites managed by Parks Canada on the Canadian side. Guided hikes are available for those who want interpretive context alongside the physical challenge. Back in Skagway, outfitters can arrange transport back from Lake Bennett by rail. The Chilkoot Trail and Dyea Site represent one of the few places where wilderness adventure and living history are genuinely inseparable, making it worth every muddy mile.
