Praise houses were the spiritual and social centers of Gullah communities across the South Carolina Sea Islands. Built and maintained by enslaved people and their descendants, these small structures served as gathering places for prayer, song, and community governance when larger church buildings were inaccessible.

Coffin Point Praise House sits on land tied to the historic Coffin Point Plantation, one of the Sea Island cotton estates that defined the region before the Civil War. After Union forces took control of the area in 1861, Saint Helena Island became a center of early freedmen's education and self-determination, a chapter closely linked to the founding of Penn Center nearby.

The building itself is a simple, single-room structure typical of the praise house form. Inside, the tradition of the ring shout, a counterclockwise shuffling devotional practice, connected worshippers to African spiritual roots while adapting to their American circumstances.

Today Coffin Point Praise House stands as one of the few remaining examples of this architectural and cultural tradition in the United States, making Saint Helena Island an essential destination for anyone drawn to Gullah Geechee heritage.
