Cordell Hull Lake was created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers when Cordell Hull Dam was completed in 1973, impounding the Cumberland River near Carthage in Smith County. The lake is named for Cordell Hull, a native Tennessean who served as U.S. Secretary of State under President Franklin D. Roosevelt and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1945 for his role in founding the United Nations.

On the water, Cordell Hull Lake is best known for fishing. The reservoir supports healthy populations of largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, sauger, and channel catfish, drawing anglers from across the mid-state region. Boating and kayaking are equally popular, with the lake's many sheltered coves offering calm conditions for paddlers of all skill levels. Swimming areas and picnic facilities managed by the Corps round out a full day on the water.
