Things to do nearCuyuna Lakes Mtn Bike Trails
The Cuyuna Lakes Mtn Bike Trails near Ironton, Minnesota offer world-class singletrack riding, striking iron-range scenery, and trails for every skill level.
The Cuyuna Range was once the heart of Minnesota iron-ore production, and the open-pit mines that defined the landscape for decades were eventually flooded and reclaimed by nature. What emerged is one of the most visually dramatic trail systems in the Midwest, where sapphire-blue lakes fill old excavations and native vegetation has softened the former industrial edges. The trail network sits within Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area, managed by the Minnesota DNR.
Today the system offers roughly 35 miles of singletrack ranging from beginner-friendly loops to demanding expert lines with rock features, rooted descents, and fast bermed corners. Riders exploring the area around Ironton will find trails like Mavis, Yawkey, and Portsmouth that reward both casual cyclists and seasoned riders with memorable flow and scenery that changes with every season.
Beyond the bike trails, the recreation area supports kayaking on the mine pit lakes and swimming at designated areas in summer. The surrounding Crow Wing County landscape adds context to the ride, reminding you that this singular place earned its reputation through a rare combination of history, ecology, and thoughtful trail design.

Tips for visiting Cuyuna Lakes Mtn Bike Trails
Visit during late September and early October when fall color peaks and trail conditions are typically firm and fast.
Bring a hydration pack rather than relying on water bottles, as many loops run long and remote between trailheads.
Start on the Mavis or Yawkey trails if you are newer to mountain biking, as they offer a gentler introduction to the terrain.
Arrive early on summer weekends to secure parking at the main trailhead off County Road 30, which fills quickly by mid-morning.
Pack a swimsuit in warmer months so you can cool off in one of the crystal-clear mine pit lakes after your ride.
