Gros Piton is one of two iconic volcanic plugs that define the southwestern landscape of St Lucia, both of which were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. Formed millions of years ago through volcanic activity, the peak rises steeply from the village of Fond Ky near the town of Soufriere, its silhouette recognised across the island and far out at sea.

The hike to the summit covers roughly 2.5 kilometres of trail but gains significant elevation in a short distance, making it a genuine physical undertaking rather than a casual stroll. Trails pass through humid tropical forest sheltering endemic birds, lizards, and a remarkable variety of plant species. The reward at the top is a sweeping 360-degree panorama taking in the Caribbean Sea, neighbouring peaks, and the patchwork of banana plantations and fishing villages below.
