Jordan Lake State Recreation Area was established after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers impounded the Haw River in the 1970s to create B. Everett Jordan Lake, a reservoir designed for flood control and water supply. The state took stewardship of the surrounding land, developing it into one of North Carolina's most visited recreation areas, spread across multiple access points around the lake's 13,900 acres of water.

The park draws anglers, paddlers, and swimmers in equal measure. Largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish keep fishing charters and weekend casters busy year-round, while kayaking along the quieter coves reveals great blue herons and wood ducks at close range. Designated swim beaches open each summer and are supervised by lifeguards during peak hours.

Camping is a centerpiece of the experience, with hundreds of sites ranging from primitive tent spots to full-hookup sites suitable for RVs. The forested campgrounds feel genuinely removed from the surrounding suburban sprawl of Apex and the Research Triangle, making an overnight stay feel like a true escape.
