Lake Lillinonah was formed in 1955 when the Housatonic Power Company completed the Stevenson Dam, impounding a long stretch of the Housatonic River between the towns of Newtown, Bridgewater, and New Milford in Connecticut. The reservoir takes its name from a figure in local Pootatuck legend, lending the lake a sense of place rooted in the region's deeper history. At roughly nine miles in length, it is one of the larger inland water bodies in the state, and its irregular, winding shape means there are always quiet corners to discover.

On the water, the experience is defined by calm. The lake's surface is sheltered by wooded ridgelines on both sides, and the coves along its banks offer peaceful paddling away from any boat traffic. Fishing is a primary draw, with largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye, and chain pickerel all found here, and the Connecticut DEEP regularly monitors the fishery. Shoreline access points allow anglers to cast from the bank as well.

The surrounding landscape adds considerable appeal. Nearby Lover's Leap State Park sits at the confluence of the Still River and the Housatonic, offering forested trails with elevated views over the valley. The towns of New Milford and Newtown both have historic town greens and local dining within a short drive, making it easy to pair a day on the water with a meal and a walk through a classic New England village center.
