Things to do nearLake Minnetonka
Lake Minnetonka is a sprawling Minnesota lake renowned for its scenic bays, vibrant waterfront communities, and rich recreational heritage.
Lake Minnetonka has drawn visitors since the late nineteenth century, when steamboats carried passengers from Minneapolis to grand resort hotels along its shores. That era of leisure left a lasting imprint on the communities surrounding the lake, from the charming downtown of Wayzata on the north shore to the historic village of Excelsior on the south, each preserving an architectural character that speaks to the lake's long role as a retreat from city life.
On the water, sailing is a beloved tradition, with regattas taking place throughout the summer season. Anglers prize the lake for walleye, bass, and northern pike, and fishing charters operate from several marinas for those who want a guided experience. Paddlers find calm refuge in the narrower bays, away from the busier stretches of open water.
The shoreline towns offer galleries, independent shops, and waterfront dining that round out a full day on the lake. Sunset over the western bays is a particularly striking sight, painting the water in deep amber and rose. Lake Minnetonka rewards those who slow down and take in its many moods, making it one of Minnesota's most beloved natural destinations.
