Leesburg was established by the Virginia General Assembly in 1758 and served as a vital crossroads in Loudoun County for more than two centuries. The town also witnessed significant Civil War activity, sitting between Union and Confederate lines throughout the conflict, and the nearby Battle of Ball's Bluff in 1861 left a lasting mark on its identity.

Walking through the Leesburg Historic District today, you encounter a layered architectural record spanning Georgian, Federal, and Victorian styles. The Old Loudoun County Courthouse, completed in 1894, dominates the central square and remains a working civic building. Docent-led historical tours depart regularly and offer detailed accounts of the town's role in early American governance and the Civil War era.

The district's ground-floor storefronts bring the streetscape to life with independent restaurants, wine bars, and boutiques. Loudoun County's wine country begins just beyond the town limits, making Leesburg a natural base for exploring the region. Day-trippers also find it convenient to the Harpers Ferry national historical park, roughly 28 kilometers to the west. Few Virginia towns pack this much authentic history into such a walkable and welcoming setting.
