Little Water Cay is one of the most important protected habitats in the Turks and Caicos Islands, designated as a nature reserve to safeguard the critically endangered Turks and Caicos rock iguana. These prehistoric-looking reptiles, some reaching nearly a metre in length, have lived on this small cay undisturbed for centuries and now number in the hundreds here.

A network of raised boardwalks threads through the low scrub and coastal vegetation, keeping foot traffic from disturbing nesting areas while giving visitors an intimate view of iguana life. The trails are short but rewarding, and the iguanas show little fear, often approaching within arm's reach of quiet observers.

The waters surrounding Little Water Cay are equally compelling. The sandbars between the cay and Providenciales shelter starfish, eagle rays, and juvenile reef fish, making the area popular for snorkeling and shallow-water exploration. Boat tours regularly include the cay as a stop, and those who prefer a slower approach can paddle through the nearby mangrove channels. Divers venturing a little further can visit the La Famille Express Shipwreck, a dramatic underwater site just a few kilometres away.
