The Mill Avenue Bridge has long served as a defining landmark in Tempe, Arizona. The current structure replaced an earlier crossing and was designed to complement the creation of Tempe Town Lake, a reservoir formed in 1999 by inflatable rubber dams on the Salt River. That transformation turned a dry riverbed into a recreational hub and gave the bridge an entirely new role as a waterfront promenade.

From the bridge deck, visitors take in broad views of the lake in both directions, with the South Mountain range visible to the south and Hayden Butte rising to the northeast. Crew teams practice on the water in the early morning, and the lake hosts dragon boat races and other events throughout the year.

The bridge links directly to Mill Avenue, Tempe's main commercial corridor and home to Arizona State University's urban campus edge. Street performers, farmers markets, and a dense stretch of dining and nightlife options make the immediate surroundings worth exploring on foot.
