Mount Washington has drawn adventurers and scientists since the mid-nineteenth century, when the first weather observatory was established near its summit. The mountain sits at the heart of the Presidential Range in New Hampshire's White Mountains, and its exposed cone rises well above tree line, creating an arctic-alpine environment that supports rare plant communities found at few other points in the eastern United States.

The Mount Washington Cog Railway, one of the oldest mountain-climbing railways in the world, offers a historic ascent from the western base, while the Mount Washington Auto Road winds eight miles up the eastern slope. Both routes deliver the same reward: a summit panorama that, on a clear day, takes in portions of New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, New York, and Massachusetts.
