The Niagara Whirlpool formed roughly 4,200 years ago as the retreating Niagara Falls carved through a buried St. David Buried Gorge, causing the river to pivot and pool into its distinctive circular basin. The result is a natural whirlpool roughly 500 feet across, where water enters from the south, circulates counterclockwise, and exits through a narrow channel to the north. It sits on the border between New York State and Ontario, making it a genuinely cross-border landmark.

From the American side, the Niagara Gorge Trail descends into the canyon and follows the riverbank close enough to feel the spray from the rapids. The views are visceral and unmediated. On the Canadian side, Queen Victoria Park operates the Whirlpool Aero Car, a heritage cable car in service since 1916, which carries visitors directly over the churning water on a memorable crossing.

The surrounding gorge is rich with fossils embedded in its limestone and shale walls, and birdwatchers scan the updrafts for raptors riding the thermal columns above the river. The broader Niagara Falls area offers additional natural landmarks nearby, including the American Falls, as well as immersive experiences like Cave of the Winds.
