The Oculus World Trade Center opened in 2016 as the centerpiece of the rebuilt World Trade Center complex, replacing the transit infrastructure destroyed on September 11, 2001. Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava conceived the structure as a dove in flight, and the metaphor is impossible to miss: two great wings of white steel and glass arch skyward above Fulton Street, creating one of the most photographed silhouettes in New York.

Inside, the main hall known as the Oculus is a cathedral-like space stretching nearly 350 feet in length. Natural light pours through a narrow skylight that runs the full length of the roof, casting long shadows across the white marble floor throughout the day. The Westfield shopping level below offers over 100 retail and dining outlets, from global brands to local food vendors, making the building a practical stop as well as a visual one.

The surrounding Financial District adds layers of history to any visit. The 9/11 Memorial and Museum sits immediately adjacent, and the reflective pools occupying the original tower footprints lend the whole precinct a tone of quiet gravity.
