Old Town Alexandria traces its origins to 1749, when the town was formally established as a Virginia port on the Potomac River. It quickly became one of colonial America's busiest trading centers, shipping tobacco and flour to ports across the Atlantic. George Washington was a frequent visitor, and several buildings from that era remain standing today, giving the neighborhood an authenticity that careful preservation has maintained across generations.

Visitors spend much of their time on King Street, the main corridor running from the Metro station straight to the waterfront. The street is lined with independent shops, wine bars, and restaurants occupying historic storefronts. The Potomac riverfront offers a pleasant promenade, with views across to National Harbor and easy access to water taxi service connecting Old Town to the National Mall.

The Torpedo Factory Art Center is one of the neighborhood's most distinctive stops, housing working studios where visitors can watch painters, sculptors, and jewelers at work. The Alexandria Archaeology Museum inside the building adds historical depth to the visit.
