Parque Nacional Rincón de la Vieja was established in 1973 to protect the volcanic massif straddling the Guanacaste mountain range in northwestern Costa Rica. The park takes its name from local legend: an indigenous princess said to have retreated to the volcano after a forbidden love. Today it spans roughly 14,000 hectares of dry forest, cloud forest, and active geothermal terrain around the 1,916-metre peak.

Two main sectors welcome visitors. The Las Pailas sector, closer to Liberia, is the most visited and features a loop trail past boiling mud pools, small volcanic craters, and a picturesque waterfall. The Santa María sector offers a quieter, more forested experience with hot springs and longer trail options suited to serious hikers.

Wildlife is extraordinary here. The park shelters over 300 bird species, plus white-faced capuchins, coatis, tapirs, and the occasional jaguar track in the mud. Guided hikes help you read the forest and spot animals you would otherwise walk past. The geothermal zone is best appreciated with a naturalist guide who can explain the volcanic processes at work.

After a day on the trails, natural hot springs near the park boundary offer a restorative soak. Parque Nacional Rincón de la Vieja is one of Central America's most compelling destinations for anyone drawn to raw, living landscapes.
