Prudence Island has been inhabited since the seventeenth century, when Roger Williams and other early Rhode Island settlers recognized the bay island's value for farming and grazing. Stone walls threading through the woods today are quiet evidence of those agricultural roots, and a small year-round community still calls the island home, giving it a lived-in character that purely recreational islands often lack.

The majority of Prudence Island is preserved as Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and Prudence Island State Park, making it a rewarding destination for guided hikes through coastal forest and meadow. The trail network winds past tidal flats, freshwater ponds, and bluff-top viewpoints where the full sweep of the bay opens before you.

The surrounding waters draw kayakers and shellfishers, and a kayaking excursion around the island's coves reveals herons, egrets, and the occasional harbor seal. The ferry crossing from Bristol is itself a pleasant introduction to bay life. Nearby Castle Hill Lighthouse makes a fine complement to a Prudence Island day. Few places in Rhode Island offer this combination of history, wildlife, and unhurried coastal beauty.
