Punchbowl Crater was formed roughly 75,000 to 100,000 years ago by a series of explosive volcanic eruptions that punched through the coral reef and limestone underlying what is now Honolulu. The resulting tuff cone rises about 500 feet above sea level, its gently sloping walls enclosing a flat floor nearly a mile across. Ancient Hawaiians regarded the site as deeply sacred and used it for religious ceremonies, a legacy preserved in its traditional name, Puowaina.

The most significant feature inside Punchbowl Crater today is the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, established in 1949 to honor American service members who died in the Pacific theater. The manicured grounds, marble courts of the missing, and commanding memorial staircase give the crater floor a contemplative dignity that visitors feel immediately upon entering.

Beyond the memorial, the crater rim trail rewards walkers with sweeping views across Honolulu Harbor, Waikiki, and the Waianae Range. Guided hikes are a good way to learn the geology and cultural history layered into the landscape. Downtown Honolulu is only minutes away, and landmarks such as Iolani Palace make for a natural complement to a morning at the crater.
