Ross Island sits in the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon, and carries a layered history beneath its green canopy. For much of the twentieth century, the island was actively mined for gravel, a process that reshaped its shoreline and deepened the lagoon that now wraps around its eastern edge. When mining operations wound down, restoration efforts began, and the island was folded into the Ross Island Sanctuary, a protected area managed to recover native habitat and support wildlife.

Today the island is closed to public foot traffic, which means the water is the only way to experience it properly. Kayaking around the island's perimeter is the most popular approach, and the calm lagoon on the east side offers sheltered paddling even for beginners. The forested interior is dense with cottonwood, willow, and alder, and the canopy hosts one of the largest great blue heron rookeries in the Pacific Northwest.

The closest put-in is at Willamette Park, roughly a mile and a half upstream, where a boat ramp and open lawn make for an easy launch. From the water you get unobstructed views of the Portland skyline to the north, a reminder of how improbably wild this refuge feels within a major city.

Ross Island rewards visitors who come with curiosity and a willingness to slow down, making it one of Portland's most quietly compelling natural destinations.
