Saint James Court was developed in the early 1890s as a private residential enclave within what was then one of Louisville's most fashionable districts. Developers platted the street around a central promenade and fountain, creating a self-contained community of grand homes built in the Richardsonian Romanesque and Queen Anne styles that were fashionable among prosperous families of the Gilded Age. The result is one of the most intact Victorian streetscapes in the American South.

The ornate centerpiece of the court is its cast-iron fountain, and the surrounding homes reward a slow walk. The Conrad-Caldwell House Museum on the adjacent St. James block offers guided interior tours that reveal the craftsmanship and social history behind the neighborhood's grandeur.

Beyond the architecture, the street hosts the annual Saint James Court Art Show each October, drawing hundreds of juried artists and tens of thousands of visitors. Nearby, Central Park provides a leafy retreat just steps away, while curious visitors often detour to see The Witches' Tree, a local landmark steeped in Louisville folklore.
