Things to do nearSaint Mary Lake

Saint Mary Lake sits at roughly 4,500 feet elevation on the eastern side of the Continental Divide, making it one of the largest lakes in Glacier National Park. The lake formed in a basin carved by glacial activity over thousands of years, and the silt suspended in its meltwater gives it the vivid color that draws photographers and painters from around the world.

The Going-to-the-Sun Road hugs the north shore, offering pull-offs where you can step out and take in the full sweep of the lake against the Lewis Range. Guided boat tours depart from the eastern end, carrying visitors across the surface toward the rugged interior of the park. Hiking trails fan out from the St. Mary area, ranging from short lakeside walks to longer routes climbing toward alpine meadows and waterfalls.

Wildlife is a constant presence here. Grizzly bears, mountain goats, and bighorn sheep all inhabit the slopes above the lake, and moose are sometimes spotted in the marshy areas near the inlets. The contrast of the dark forested ridges, open sky, and brilliant water makes Saint Mary Lake one of the most visually arresting spots in the American West, and reason enough on its own to make the journey to Montana.
