Saint Peter's Basilica stands on the site where, according to tradition, the apostle Peter was buried in the first century. Construction of the current structure began in 1506 under Pope Julius II and continued for over a century, drawing contributions from Bramante, Raphael, and Michelangelo, who redesigned the dome that still defines the Roman skyline.

Inside, the scale is genuinely staggering. The nave stretches more than 180 meters, and the interior is lined with mosaics, sculptures, and chapels that represent centuries of Catholic artistic patronage.
