Smith Island has been continuously settled since the late seventeenth century, making it one of the oldest English-speaking communities on the Atlantic seaboard. Its watermen have harvested blue crabs and oysters from the surrounding shallows for generations, and that tradition remains the economic and cultural backbone of the island today. The distinctive local dialect, a remnant of Elizabethan-era English, can still be heard among longtime residents.

The island is divided into three villages: Ewell, Rhodes Point, and Tylerton, each separated by marsh and connected by boat. Visitors spend time exploring the Chesapeake Bay Maritime heritage at the small Smith Island Center museum in Ewell, wandering the waterfront, and watching workboats return with the day's catch. Kayaking through the tidal guts offers an intimate look at the marsh ecosystem that surrounds the island.

The Chesapeake Bay setting means wildlife is never far away. Egrets stalk the shallows, ospreys nest on channel markers, and bottlenose dolphins occasionally follow the ferry route. The island's low profile and minimal light pollution also make it a surprisingly good spot for stargazing on clear evenings.

Smith Island is the kind of place that asks you to put the phone away and simply be present. Its isolation is its greatest asset, offering an authenticity that is increasingly rare along the mid-Atlantic coast.
