Snipe Keys is a loose scattering of low mangrove islands sitting in the shallow backcountry northwest of Key West, Florida. Part of the broader mosaic of the Florida Keys, these islets have never been developed, and their appeal rests entirely on that fact. The surrounding waters fall within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, offering legal protection to the seagrass beds, coral patches, and tidal flats that make the ecosystem so productive.

Anglers have long regarded this stretch of backcountry as prime flats-fishing territory. Bonefish, permit, and tarpon move through the channels and grass flats with the tides, drawing fly fishers from around the world. Guided fishing charters out of Key West regularly run this area, poling quietly across the shallows in search of tailing fish. The same calm, clear water that suits anglers also rewards kayakers, who can thread through narrow mangrove passages and explore the interior channels at their own pace.

Wildlife watching is equally rewarding. Great white herons, reddish egrets, and roseate spoonbills forage along the edges of the mangroves, while bottlenose dolphins occasionally work the deeper cuts nearby. The nearby Snipe Point area offers similar habitat and is worth including on a longer backcountry day trip.
