Spectacle Island has one of the more remarkable transformation stories among Boston's harbor islands. For much of the twentieth century the island served as a city dump, and its shores were largely inaccessible and heavily contaminated. Its revival came through the Big Dig, Boston's massive highway-reconstruction project, whose excavated fill was used to cap the landfill, raise the island's elevation, and create the rolling green terrain visitors walk today. The project was completed in the early 2000s and the island opened to the public shortly after.

Today the island spans roughly 105 acres and features five miles of trails that wind through meadows and along coastal bluffs. The two drumlins at the island's center give hikers a genuine climb and a reward at the top: unobstructed views of downtown Boston, Logan Airport, and the outer harbor. A sandy swimming beach stretches along the western shore, and a small marina accommodates private boats alongside the public ferry.

The visitor center near the dock offers exhibits on the island's natural and industrial history, and rangers lead interpretive programs during the summer season. Birders find the open meadows and shoreline productive, particularly during spring and fall migration. The surrounding waters draw kayakers and anglers as well.
