Steep Creek flows through the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area along Glacier Spur Road, draining cold glacial meltwater into the broader valley. The stream has long served as a spawning corridor for Pacific salmon, and that ecological role is what draws visitors from around the world each summer. Sockeye arrive first, followed by coho, and the shallow, transparent water makes every stage of their journey visible from the boardwalk above.

The creek's salmon run is the primary reason brown bears congregate here in numbers unusual for a site so close to a city. Watching a bear stand motionless in the current before lunging for a fish is a genuinely wild moment, and the elevated boardwalk lets you witness it safely and without disrupting the animals. Rangers from the U.S. Forest Service are often present to answer questions and manage viewing distances.
