The museum he built to house that collection opened in 1931 and was donated to the State of Florida upon his death, making it one of the few state art museums in the country founded on a single private bequest of this scale. Today the permanent collection spans five centuries of European painting, with particular strength in Flemish and Italian Baroque works. Four large-scale Rubens cartoons depicting the Triumph of the Eucharist anchor the collection and draw scholars from around the world.

Beyond the painting galleries, the complex encompasses the Ca d'Zan mansion, a lavish Venetian Gothic winter residence completed in 1926 and restored to its original grandeur, where visitors can tour elaborately decorated rooms overlooking the bay. The historic Asolo Theater adds a performing arts dimension to the campus, and the Tibbals Learning Center presents one of the most detailed scale models of a traveling circus ever constructed, honoring the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey legacy with surprising depth.

The bayfront grounds themselves, laced with Italian Renaissance-style gardens and dotted with bronze casts of classical sculpture, make the estate feel closer to a European villa complex than a conventional American museum campus. Dining options on site allow visitors to extend their stay through the afternoon.
