Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in the 1850s and 1860s, The Ramble was conceived as a wild garden, a deliberate counterpoint to the open meadows elsewhere in Central Park. Olmsted modeled it on the picturesque English landscape tradition, layering native shrubs, rocky ledges, and a man-made stream called the Gill to create the illusion of untamed nature within a meticulously planned park.

Today the woodland is managed as a designated bird sanctuary, and its reputation among birders is unrivaled in New York City. The dense understory and reliable water source make it a magnet for migratory species. On a good May morning you might spot more than twenty warbler species before breakfast. The guided tours offered through the Central Park Conservancy are an excellent way to learn the landscape and its seasonal rhythms.

Just beyond the tree line, several of the park's most beloved landmarks are within easy walking distance. The elegant cast-iron span of Bow Bridge sits at the woodland's western edge, and the ornate Bethesda Terrace is only a short stroll south.
