Water Island holds a quiet but layered history. During World War II, the U.S. Army constructed Fort Segarra here, a coastal defense installation whose concrete bunkers and tunnels still stand partially intact above Flamingo Bay. Exploring the overgrown ruins offers a striking contrast to the island's tranquil beach scenery, and the elevated battery positions frame some of the finest views of the St. Thomas harbor entrance.

The island's main draw for most visitors is Honeymoon Beach, a sheltered crescent of pale sand where the water stays shallow and calm enough for easy snorkeling. Colorful reef fish congregate around the rocky outcrops at either end of the bay, and the gentle current makes it accessible for all ages. A small beach bar operates on a relaxed schedule, serving cold drinks and light bites to those willing to linger.

Beyond the beach, Water Island's interior trails wind through dry tropical scrub, offering glimpses of resident iguanas and seabirds. The island has fewer than 200 permanent residents, which keeps its atmosphere genuinely local and unhurried. Nearby, Phantasea Tropical Botanical Garden on St. Thomas makes a rewarding half-day addition to any visit.
