The Welland Canal has a history rooted in necessity. When the original canal opened in 1829, it solved a problem that had long frustrated Great Lakes commerce: Niagara Falls made direct navigation between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie impossible. The current canal, the fourth iteration on roughly this alignment, stretches about 43 kilometres through the Niagara Peninsula and uses eight locks to raise and lower ships roughly 99 metres between the two lakes.

Watching a vessel transit one of the locks is the defining experience here. Bulk carriers loaded with grain, iron ore, and salt squeeze through chambers with only centimetres to spare on each side, a slow-motion feat of seamanship. Lock 3 in St. Catharines is the most visitor-friendly stop, with a dedicated viewing platform, a museum chronicling the canal's four construction eras, and interpretive panels explaining how the locks operate.

Beyond the locks, the canal corridor rewards those who slow down. The Welland Canals Parkway Trail traces the old canal bed through Port Dalhousie and Thorold, passing heritage bridges and quiet marinas. Nearby, Brock's Monument at Queenston Heights and Fort George National Historic Site add layers of War of 1812 history to any itinerary in the region.
